Select a Twitter account, one which is not verified. Looking at the Tweets and Replies of this account, your task is to analyze the ethos, or persona, which the account has created through their rhetoric. Ethos is one of the three rhetorical appeals, as categorized by Aristotle (Ethos, Logos, and Pathos). Ethos itself is made up of knowledge (phronesis), virtue (arete), and goodwill (eunoia). Using this concept, and the twitter account you have selected and interrogated, what is the ethos that the account has constructed, and how does the account appeal to that ethos? How far back you go into your chosen accounts twitter timeline is up to you, however it should be enough to get a good sense of the account (more than a few tweets). You need to see both tweets and replies, since this will give you the sense of how an account is defining itself both in its own terms and who it interacts with. Questions to ask yourself as you read through your chosen accounts timeline: What are the topics or interests of this account? What style of composition does this account use? How often does this account use images and memes? How does this account interact with others? Are they often replying to some accounts, and conspicuously avoiding others? A successful essay will: Begin with a strong thesis statement in the introduction which describes the ethos of the chosen account and its effect. Provide specific details in the body to support the argument in the thesis. This evidence includes specific tweets, replies, or other data gleaned from the Twitter account. Assess the relative success of this account. Is it convincing? Given your judgement, is this account making arguments in good faith. This essay should be a minimum of 1,200 words. My goal with this assignment is to encourage us to remember that behind each social media post is a person. Sometimes that person is a step further back, as bots and sock puppets proliferate. Nevertheless, each account is operating with the goals and context of a person in the background, and it is up to the critical reader to judge the perspective of the person and whether they are making claims in good faith.
