Ageing of the Australian population has rapidly increased in recent years. Since the 1950s studies have identified negative attitudes of nurses towards geriatric nursing and other work with older patients (Bodner, 2009). These attitudes have prevailed and highlight the low status associated with working with older patients. Social developments and ageist stereotypes combined with increased in the old aged population have significantly influenced the health care system (Eymard and Douglas, 2012). The older population is perceived as problems requiring considerable attention and resources by society in general. This essay will explore the attitudes and beliefs that underpin negative comments towards older people by nursing staff. This essay will further analyse how these negative attitudes and beliefs could influence practice of other healthcare professionals.
